Course Overview

In this fun and interactive course, students aged 13–17 will learn the foundations of 2D game development using Python and Pygame. They'll start with basic graphics and player controls, then move on to animations, collisions, sound, and scoring systems.

The course is ideal for teens who have a basic understanding of Python and want to apply their skills creatively and practically. Making video games is also one of the best ways to improve programming skills.


Requirements

  • No previous game development experience is required.
  • Students should have a basic understanding of the Python Programming Language (including variables, loops, conditionals, and functions).
  • Students will need a computer with Python and Pygame installed. Instructions for setting up the necessary software will be provided after your enrolment.
  • Zoom and an internet connection

  1. Introduction to Game Development
    • What is Pygame?
    • Installing and setting up Pygame
    • Creating a game window
    • The game loop (event handling, updating, drawing)
    • Drawing shapes and displaying text
    • Mini Project: Moving Shapes with Arrow Keys
  2. Sprites and Player Control
    • Adding images and player characters
    • Moving the player with keyboard input
    • Boundaries and screen edges
    • Using classes for player objects
    • Mini Project: Controllable Player Sprite
  3. Enemies, Obstacles & Collisions
    • Creating enemy sprites
    • Moving objects automatically
    • Detecting collisions
    • Basic game mechanics (health, score)
    • Mini Project: Avoid the Falling Blocks Game
  4. Sound, Scoring & Game Polish
    • Adding sound effects and music
    • Displaying and updating score
    • Game over screen and restart
    • Timer countdown or levels
    • Mini Project: Simple Shooter or Catch Game
  5. Final Game Project
    • Planning and sketching a game idea
    • Using multiple files and reusable code
    • Game menu/start screen
    • Testing and debugging
    • Presenting the finished game
