Course Overview

Data Governance, Privacy & Responsible AI is a practical 6-hour instructor-led course designed to help professionals understand how organisations can manage data and Artificial Intelligence responsibly, securely and transparently. Participants will learn the foundations of data governance, including data ownership, quality, classification, access and lifecycle management, before exploring privacy principles, data protection by design and risk assessment. The course then examines Responsible AI topics including fairness, bias, transparency, human oversight, security, accountability and the responsible use of Generative AI.

Through practical exercises and a governance case study, learners will assess a business AI use case, identify data and AI risks, define appropriate controls and create a simple governance framework. The course provides practical regulatory awareness without attempting to provide legal advice.

Requirements

No previous experience with data governance, data protection or Responsible AI is required.

Participants should have basic workplace computer skills and an interest in how organisations collect, use, manage or protect data.

Familiarity with data analysis, Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, or business processes can help but is not essential.

No programming, statistics or Machine Learning experience is required.

You may also complete the following course(s) before attending the Data Governance, Privacy & Responsible AI course but they are not mandatory:

Frequently Asked Questions

Data Governance is the framework of responsibilities, policies, processes and controls used to ensure that organisational data is managed appropriately throughout its lifecycle.

It commonly includes areas such as data ownership, quality, classification, access, security, retention and accountability.

No. This course does not require programming, Machine Learning or Data Science experience.

It is designed for technical and non-technical professionals who need to understand how to manage data and AI responsibly within an organisation.

Privacy by Design means considering privacy and data protection from the beginning of a system, product or business process rather than attempting to add protections after it has already been developed.

This can include minimising unnecessary personal data, controlling access, protecting information and considering people's rights throughout the data lifecycle.

Yes. Learners will examine how bias can enter AI systems through data, design decisions and usage, and how unfair outcomes can affect individuals or groups.

The course introduces practical controls such as representative evaluation, human review, monitoring, and clearly defined accountability.

Yes, at an awareness level. Learners will be introduced to the EU AI Act, its risk-based approach and the importance of transparency, prohibited practices and higher-risk AI use cases.

The course does not attempt to provide detailed legal interpretation or certification against the legislation.

Yes. Learners will practise identifying an AI system's purpose, data, stakeholders, risks and potential impacts before defining appropriate controls.

The practical project includes creating a simple AI risk register, assigning ownership and deciding whether a proposed use case should proceed, be modified or require further assessment.

Responsible AI means developing, procuring and using AI in ways that consider factors such as fairness, transparency, privacy, security, accuracy, human oversight and accountability.

The objective is not simply to make an AI system work, but to understand its potential impact and put appropriate safeguards in place.

Yes. The course introduces the key principles of the UK GDPR and explains how concepts such as transparency, purpose limitation, data minimisation, security and accountability relate to organisational data and AI projects.

The course provides practical awareness, not specialist legal advice.

A Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) is a structured process used to identify and reduce privacy risks associated with processing personal data.

A DPIA is particularly important when processing is likely to pose a high risk to people's rights and freedoms.

Yes. The course examines practical risks associated with Generative AI, including inaccurate outputs, bias, confidential information, privacy, intellectual property, inappropriate reliance on generated content and inadequate human review.

Human oversight means ensuring that appropriate people remain involved in reviewing, monitoring or intervening in AI-assisted processes, particularly where outcomes could significantly affect individuals or organisations.

The appropriate level of oversight depends on the use case, impact and level of risk.

The course is suitable for managers, business analysts, Data Analysts, AI users, project managers, IT professionals, compliance teams, data professionals, process owners and organisational leaders.

It is particularly useful for organisations adopting Generative AI or other AI tools and wanting staff to understand the associated governance, privacy and Responsible AI considerations.
