Course Overview

Financial Modelling & Analysis with Microsoft Excel is a practical 12-hour instructor-led course designed to help learners build structured financial models, analyse business performance and support financial decision-making using Excel. Participants will learn how to organise financial assumptions, forecast revenue and costs, analyse cash flows, calculate investment appraisal measures such as NPV and IRR, perform scenario and sensitivity analysis, and present financial results using clear reports, charts and key performance indicators.

Through practical exercises and an end-to-end financial modelling project, learners will develop a model that moves from assumptions and forecasts through to cash-flow analysis, valuation and management insights. The course is suitable for finance professionals, analysts, accountants, managers, business owners and anyone who uses Excel for financial planning and analysis.

Requirements

Participants should have basic to intermediate experience using Microsoft Excel before joining this course.

Learners should be comfortable entering and editing data, using formulas, working with worksheets, and using common functions such as SUM, AVERAGE and IF.

Previous financial modelling experience is not required. Basic familiarity with business or financial concepts such as revenue, costs, profit, cash flow and percentages is helpful but not essential.

Learners who need to strengthen their Excel skills first may benefit from completing our Microsoft Excel Intermediate to Advanced or Data Analysis & Reporting with Microsoft Excel courses.

Microsoft Excel 2019, 2021 or Microsoft 365 is recommended.

You may also complete the following course(s) before attending the Financial Modelling & Analysis with Microsoft Excel course but they are not mandatory:

Frequently Asked Questions

Financial modelling is the process of creating a structured representation of a business, project or investment using financial assumptions and calculations. A financial model can forecast future performance, analyse cash flows, evaluate investments, and test how changes in assumptions affect financial outcomes.

Advanced Excel skills are not required, but learners should already be comfortable using worksheets, formulas and common functions such as SUM, AVERAGE and IF.

Learners who need a stronger Excel foundation may benefit from completing our Microsoft Excel Intermediate to Advanced course first.

Net Present Value (NPV) measures the present value of expected future cash flows after considering the initial investment and an appropriate discount rate.

Internal Rate of Return (IRR) estimates the discount rate at which an investment's NPV becomes zero.

Both measures are commonly used to compare and evaluate investment opportunities.

The course includes concepts relevant to budgeting and planning, including revenue and cost forecasts, actual vs budget comparisons and variance analysis.

However, the main focus is broader financial modelling and analysis rather than detailed accounting or bookkeeping.

Monte Carlo simulation, financial options and Black-Scholes may be introduced as optional or bonus topics where time permits.

The core 12-hour course focuses on practical financial modelling, forecasting, investment appraisal and decision analysis suitable for a broader workplace audience.

The course is suitable for Financial Analysts, FP&A professionals, accountants, finance teams, business analysts, managers, entrepreneurs and business owners who want to improve their financial analysis and modelling skills using Microsoft Excel.

It is also suitable for learners preparing for roles involving budgeting, forecasting, investment analysis, or financial decision support.

Previous financial modelling experience is not required.

Basic familiarity with concepts such as revenue, costs, profit, cash flow and percentages is helpful, but the course explains the main financial concepts as they are introduced.

Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) is a financial valuation method that estimates the present value of future cash flows.

The course explains how discount rates are used to convert future cash flows into today's value and how DCF can support investment and project evaluation.

Yes. Learners will build practical forecasts for revenue, costs, profit and cash flow using assumptions and business drivers.

The course also demonstrates how scenarios and sensitivity analysis can be used to understand how changes in assumptions affect future financial performance.

Yes. You will create Base, Best and Worst Case scenarios and examine how changes in key assumptions affect financial outcomes.

You will also use Excel tools such as Goal Seek, Scenario Manager and Data Tables to perform practical what-if and sensitivity analysis.

Yes. The course includes an end-to-end practical project where learners build a financial model from assumptions through to forecasts, cash-flow analysis, valuation and management reporting.

The project includes NPV, IRR, scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis and financial visualisation.
